Corral milkings: An early-morning milking in the corral, by hand, with the herd around you.

By reservation

Corral milkings

Bring the cows in from the night pasture and milk by hand in the corral, as the family has done for a century. We show you how, the calves stay close, and the morning ends with breakfast on the farmhouse porch.

Season
June to September
Duration
From 6:30am, about ninety minutes

How it goes

It is a small, quiet morning. We keep the group to six so the cows stay calm and everyone gets a turn.

  1. I

    Bringing the cows in

We walk out to the night pasture together and bring the milking cows down to the corral.

  2. II

    Milking by hand

We show you how to sit, where to put your hands, and how to keep a steady rhythm. Then it is your turn.

  3. III

    The calves

The calves wait at the rail and get their share. You can help feed them.

  4. IV

    Breakfast on the porch

Eggs, bread, and jam from the kitchen, on the farmhouse porch, with the herd going back out to grass.

Come ready

  • Clothes and shoes you do not mind getting dirty
  • A warm layer. Mornings are cool, even in July
  • An appetite for breakfast

Good to know

Do we drink the milk?

No. The milk goes to the calves. Breakfast uses milk from a dairy down the road.

Can children milk?

Yes, with a grown-up beside them. Most children over six manage it after a few tries.

When do we finish?

Around 8am, after breakfast. You have the rest of the day.
