A small crew from Gardiner, at the foot of the Gunks.

Skytop Floor Co. is John and a crew of three. John spent years in general carpentry before he started laying and refinishing floors full time in 2014. He named the company after the stone tower on the ridge he hikes most weekends.

We take a few jobs at a time so we can do each one properly. John gives every estimate himself and is on site for every job, from the first board to the final walkthrough.

Common questions.

Something else on your mind? Call (000) 000-0000.

How much dust will there be?

Very little. Our sanders run into a vacuum system, we tape plastic over doorways, and we clean up at the end of each day. You will still want to keep pets and kids out of the work area.

How long does refinishing take?

Most rooms take 3 to 5 days, including drying time between coats. You can walk on the floor in socks about a day after the last coat, and move furniture back after 3 to 7 days, depending on the finish.

Can you match our old boards?

Usually, yes. For old pine, chestnut or oak we look for salvaged boards first, often from a closet or a reclaimed lumber yard, then match the color with stain or finish. We will tell you at the estimate how close we can get.

Do you do stairs?

Yes. We install new treads and risers, and sand and refinish existing stairs. Stairs are often done at the same time as the hallway so everything matches.

Do we need to move out?

Not usually. Most people stay home and use the rest of the house. With oil-based finishes we suggest staying elsewhere for a night or two because of the smell. Water-based finishes are much milder.

What does it cost?

Typical ranges are listed under Services: refinishing usually runs $4 to $6 per square foot. Every floor is different, so your exact price comes after we see it. The estimate is free, in writing, and there is no pressure to go ahead.
